The students will read a novel about the Movement (Mississippi Trial, 1955) and use the perspectives they gained from it to create an iMovie presentation on what they learned. The iMovie will have a brief discussion of the book and an outline of the key people and events involved during the Civil Rights Movement. This will be for an 11th grade History class. This lesson will satisfy the Utah Curriculum US History Standard:
Standard 9 "The students will understand the emergence and development of the human rights and culture in the modern era."

Objective 1 "Analyze how the civil rights movement affected United States society."
Some ethical issues I will need to consider will be whether all students can have easy access to iMovie, and whether the information, pictures, and video clips they use are copyrighted. I can accommodate by allowing classtime for students to go to the computer lab to work on their projects. I will also need to give a brief lesson on what pictures and information on the internet is usable.

Ethics in Teaching History

Sounds like there's a lot to know about copyrights. I was hoping I could have my students read some historical novels in class, but I'll have to double check that it's legal. My history teachers did when I was in high school but who knows if they knew anything about copyrights. Same thing with movies. I suppose I'll need to be more careful with having students look things up on the internet as well. There's a lot of stuff out there that can get them in trouble. Kinda krazy that I'll have to teach ethics and proper internet usage in a history class when all I want to do is teach history. Students will use Inspiration to create a concept map detailing the pros and cons for the colonists' decision to declare independence. It seems to me that most new technologies I hear and learn about are great for science, math, and even language classes. There are a lot out there that a history teacher could use to supplement a lesson but are mostly one-time use kind of activities. The only new sort of technology I can think of that could be used on a regular basis is Power Point Presentation and possibly Inspiration. Anyone know of any others that I am just missing? Perhaps a great site with virtual tours of many different historical sites. Just anything to make history more interesting for today's over-stimulated children who don't get a thrill without blood guts and gore. Anyone? Ideas?

IP&T digital video reflection

Amy Eddy and Savanna Williamson watched the “Bookends of War” video on using technology in a lesson on Pearl Harbor and also “Why things are where they are” from the NETS Digital Video Library.

In the “Bookends of War” video, we observed that Gail VanDeVerg the teacher is having her Language Arts class create web pages with what they learn about Pearl Harbor from a field trip and guest speakers. They use digital cameras and some sort of web publisher to post pictures of their field trip on a web page. The students are excited about their work because their web pages will be entered in a contest that many people will see. Ms. VanDeVerg teaches the students how to use the technology but doesn't seem to really use it herself in the lesson. They did learn a lot and it was very interactive. They also used group work and other readings to help learn more. There may be a problem in other schools with using digital cameras and letting students use them on their own. The teacher may have to take the pictures and let the students put them on the web page.

In the “Why things are where they are” video, we observed that the students and the teacher were all using technology to learn about Geography. Nancy Haas, the teacher is teaching the students about different ways to teach Geography. She asks them to make a presentation about a particular country and to pay special attention to the people, culture, and environment. They think of questions they would want answered and then present their work to answer those questions. They use Power Point Presentations and laptops to create their projects. The students are all adults and work together in groups a lot. One barrier might be if there are not enough computers for each student. In that case, a teacher could do the project on a classroom level. Teachers could use other technologies such as wiki pages for the students to create web pages or Microsoft Publisher or Quark XPress to make pamphlets about the country.

What to do?

Hey Brother West, I've tried several ways of getting in touch with my group member for this week's assignment and can't seem to reach her. Anybody else out there have any ideas for using technology in history classes? Then we'll claim some wiki pages.

Hey Crazy A!

I checked out the wiki page and I think for this assignment, we just need to come up with some sort of technology to use in history classes and post everything on the wiki site. I think I read that you like Power Point Presentations. Would you like to do something on that? I guess we need two pages so we can either do one on PPP and one on something else, or we could do one explaining what PPP is and another on how to use it in the classroom effectively. I came from a very small high school where there wasn't a lot of money in the system. We did have computers but they were for the sole purpose of the computer classes. Since I'm going to be a history teacher I tried really hard to come up with a time when technology was used in my history classes. The most I could think of was either using overhead projectors or looking up current events on line before class when I forgot to look in the newspaper the night before. I do remember though in my government class during the 2000 elections we went to the computer lab during an open period and used the internet to look up the platforms of each candidate. In this instance, it was a nice tool to get information and pass it along to others, though I don't feel like I learned much more about how to critically analyze the platforms. Maybe if we talked more about what opposing positions on different issues really meant. I'm not even sure I could come up with really great ways to use technology in history classes. Any suggestions?

School Has Started

And my life has ended.
